This Lemania military watch, datable to the period of the Second World War, is linked to its issue to the Czechoslovak armed forces through the “Majetek Vojenske Spravy”, literally “Military Defence Property”: the Czechoslovak state body that managed military assets and distributed equipment, watches included, to units and detachments.
History
Lemania, known for its mechanical movements and chronographs, supplied watches to several European armed forces, which valued their robustness, precision and durability. For an army, a reliable watch was a working tool: it served to coordinate operations, to navigate and to synchronise the timing of missions.
The model
The watch has the typical traits of the military instruments of its time: no superfluous decoration, a generously sized steel case, 38 x 50 mm, designed for legibility even under stress, and a clear dial with hours, minutes and seconds. The crystal is acrylic (plexiglass), the strap leather. Lemania watches issued to the Czechoslovak army are now sought after by collectors of military watches, because they unite a chapter of Czechoslovak military history with one of the Swiss watch industry.
