The “Bullhead” is one of Lemania’s most recognisable models, from a Swiss brand known above all for producing high-quality chronograph movements. The name, “bull’s head”, describes its distinctive feature: the crown and chronograph pushers are not on the side of the case, as in traditional chronographs, but at the top, at 12 o’clock.
History
This chronograph belongs to the 1970s, the same period as the Omega Bullhead, with which it shares more or less the same case and movement. This is no coincidence: Lemania and Omega, together with Tissot, had joined in a single group in the 1930s, and the Bullhead is an example of how the houses of the group shared their resources.
The model
The case, thicker and sturdier than that of a traditional wristwatch, gives the watch a strong presence. The dial follows the chronograph layout, with dedicated registers and thick, highly legible hands. The movement is a Lemania mechanical chronograph; sources indicate calibre 1340 or a variant of it. For the collector the Bullhead is an uncommon piece of unmistakable design, sought after by those who love unconventional 1970s chronographs.
